What an emergency roof tarp costs
A tarp buys you time to get proper bids. Ask these questions so the temporary fix stays temporary, and know the going rate before you call.
The numbers
- Roof tarping: $150 to $3,300, average $450.
- Roof inspection: $125 to $360.
- Water damage cleanup if the leak got inside: $1,400 to $6,300.
All national 2025 figures from HomeAdvisor.
What moves the price
- Roof size and pitch.
- Damage area: a small hole and a torn-off section are different jobs.
- Night or weekend timing. Ask what the after-hours charge is.
- Whether the price includes coming back to remove the tarp.
Local labor
Roofers in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro earned a median $30.81 an hour in May 2025, against $26.65 nationally. (BLS Seattle, BLS U.S.) The gap is smaller than in plumbing or electrical work, but expect quotes at or above the national figures.
Hiring for the tarp
Even a tarp crew doing roofing for pay should be L&I registered; roofing is a registered specialty. (L&I) Check it on Verify. Ask for photos before and after, for your insurer. Keep the tarp invoice separate from any repair contract.
